Oink, Oink!

This swine flu craze is killing me! I worked in the ER last night and cannot count how many people came in just to be checked. It didn't help that a few of my attending docs were in on the pandemonium.

I don't get it. It's just the flu, people! Am I missing something? As far as I know, the people who have lost their lives* are people who were in a fragile medical state and would have likely had a poor outcome if they had gotten the regular flu. So, that means most of us, including you - reader out there, are not at risk of having a serious illness with this flu.

I'm just not buying it. Maybe I'll eat my words when I'm quarantined in my bed - but for now, I think I'll see if I can take advantage of cheap flights to Mexico** ;)

*By no means am I saying that the lives lost aren't tragic - they are!
**I do not endorse any non-urgent traveling to Mexico.

lol Joey has been in the ER all month too...hating it.

But I will say Bright got a cold 3 days ago and Joey said he was fine (didn't have swine flu) because he didn't have a fever. So when his fever got above 101, I decided I needed to take him in!

But his dumb dr wouldn't even test him, what a waste of his time, our time and money.

I get it... but when he's never had a fever and then he has ALL the symptoms they listed (oh, did I mention rash too?!)

grrr....

This is dumb. Why does the media have to scare us all?!

LOVE IT!!! I know exactly what you mean! Things are REALLY crazy down here and we've got a lot of schools closed in the area. I feel like its all I talk about all day! We've been REALLY busy at the clinic. If the media hadn't jumped on this and blown it into such a firestorm I don't think it would be so bad! GOOD LUCK!

I agree. It's getting a little out of control. The conference office of our church set out guidelines for communion service this week and servers have to use hand sanitizer, then put on rubber gloves to serve the bread and the juice has to be in individual cups and not to be dipped into like normal. I bet life in a hospital was NUTS!

Girl...I'm totally with you!! I am so fed up with all of this FEAR that our society is caught up in. I'm personally not watcing the news anymore, I don't want to be sucked in to all of the hype. Hope all is well!

I'm with you, sista. People get so worked up over the media's tendency to freak the EFF out, it just makes it worse. Luckily my hospital is remaining relatively calm but then again, I don't have to deal with the ER either. But I, too, have been really annoyed with people overreacting. :)

Finally, a voice of reason! I am so over the swine flu hype!! I live in CA and I'd still go to Mexico if I could get a good deal! Only one person has even died in the US and that was a child so naturally his immune system was not fully developed. While that death is a tragedy, it is certainly not worthy of causing mass hysteria considering roughly 36,000 people die of the fly each year. I think all the pandemonium is irrisponsible.

Thank you for posting this....I'm waiting for all of the Tulsa schools to start closing, even though there are no reported cases here. The media is making things sound so bad. UGH!

OMG!! how could you NOT be freaking out?? I mean it is the Swine Flu people...haha just kidding. I am still going to work even though half of my students went to Mexico for Easter. And we got nada sickness there, so what is the crazy fuss?

LOL - Erin, will you check me for swine flu? I don't get it ether.

David and I are sorry to hear about your failed match. It sounds like you are at peace with that decision and it was the right one for you. We are anxious for you to get your sticky match and keep you in our prayers!

Hear hear!! Not to make light of the situation but seriously, the media's got everyone in an uproar.

I've heard everything from, this is natural selection & survival of the fittest to this is a conspiracy to rid Mexico of all the drug lords/drug trafficking problems they're having. WTF?!Really people?

Hope things calm down (as much as can be expected) in the ER for you, E!
